Vaccination is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your pet from preventable illness. At Paws & Co Veterinary Centre we follow the latest WSAVA guidance, tailoring each protocol to your individual pet’s lifestyle, age, and risk profile — not a one-size-fits-all corporate schedule.

Why vaccinate your pet?

Modern vaccines protect against serious, often fatal diseases that were once commonplace in the UK. Conditions like parvovirus in dogs, panleukopenia in cats, and myxomatosis in rabbits can devastate unprotected animals — and many of these diseases remain present in our local environment in West Yorkshire. Vaccination not only protects your individual pet but contributes to herd immunity that keeps the wider pet population safe.

For young animals, the primary vaccination course establishes lifelong immune memory. For adults, periodic boosters maintain that protection. Some diseases (like leptospirosis and kennel cough) require annual re-vaccination because immunity fades; others provide much longer protection and don’t need yearly top-ups. We’ll talk you through which is which and never recommend a vaccine your pet doesn’t need.

Diseases we vaccinate against

Dogs

Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis (DHPPi+L), and Kennel Cough. Rabies for international travel.

Cats

Feline Panleukopenia, Calicivirus, Herpesvirus (the “cat flu” complex), and Feline Leukaemia (FeLV) for outdoor cats.

Rabbits

Combined annual vaccine covering Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD1 and RHD2).

Travel & Boarding

Rabies certification, Animal Health Certificates, and full kennel cough cover for boarding kennels — including our own Yorkshire Paws & Co.

Puppy & kitten vaccination schedule

Young animals are particularly vulnerable in the weeks before their immune system fully develops. We follow a clear, two-visit primary course for puppies and kittens, with the first vaccine typically at 8 weeks of age and the second at 10–12 weeks. Your pet is fully protected approximately one week after their second injection.

Each vaccination appointment includes a full nose-to-tail health examination, weight check, and time to discuss feeding, parasite prevention, training and socialisation. We don’t rush new owners through — getting these early consultations right shapes the rest of your pet’s life.

Adult booster vaccinations

Adult pets need an annual health check and booster vaccination to maintain protection. Modern protocols mean some components (like core distemper and parvo) are given every three years rather than annually, while others (lepto, kennel cough, rabbit combined) need a yearly top-up. We’ll explain exactly what your pet is having and why — in plain English.

When to bring your pet in promptly

Most vaccination appointments are routine, but contact us straight away if your pet:

  • Is travelling abroad — rabies vaccinations require minimum 21 days’ notice
  • Is going into kennels or daycare next week — kennel cough takes 7 days to provide protection
  • Is showing any signs of illness — vaccines should only be given to healthy animals

Frequently asked questions

How long does a vaccination appointment take?

Standard appointments are 15 minutes, which includes a full health check, the vaccination itself, and time to ask questions. Puppy and kitten first appointments often run slightly longer because there’s more to discuss.

Are there side effects?

Most pets show no reaction at all. Some may be a little quiet for 24 hours or have mild soreness at the injection site. Serious reactions are rare; we monitor every patient and will discuss any concerns specific to your pet.

Can I skip vaccinations if my pet stays indoors?

Even indoor pets can be exposed to viruses brought in on clothing, shoes, or by other animals. We can talk through a tailored protocol based on your pet’s actual risk — we don’t over-vaccinate.

What if my pet’s booster is overdue?

If you’re within 3 months of the due date, a single booster is usually sufficient. Beyond that, your pet may need to restart their primary course. Bring them in and we’ll advise.

Do you offer titre testing?

Yes — if you’d prefer to test your pet’s existing immunity before deciding on boosters, we can arrange titre testing. Speak to our team for current pricing.

What about exotic pets?

We offer rabbit vaccinations as standard. For other exotic species, please book an exotic pet consultation (£65) and we’ll advise on appropriate preventative care.
